Our Programs

"I am very excited about the changes I see in my son. For the first time, he is able to read without any anxiety and frustration. To see this kind of transformation is wonderful. Thank you so much for giving him the confidence of knowing he can learn."

Pride’s Reading and Spelling Program

At Pride Learning Center, we realize that our students, for the most part, do not need more of the same instruction they are receiving at school.  Instead, our students need a different approach to their instruction that will eventually help them to close the reading gap. Therefore, at Pride we focus on the children learning the sounds and formations of the letters from the beginning, and moving forward step by step. This is taught very thoroughly using a structured, systematic and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness that incorporates all of the child’s senses.

Our reading and spelling program is based upon scientific research and meets the standards outlined by the National Reading Panel, No Child Left Behind, the International Dyslexia Association, and the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators.

Program Components

Our reading and spelling program, based on Orton-Gillingham research, is built around eight essential components:

Multisensory

Research has shown that individuals struggling with reading and spelling improve their ability to store and retrieve phonemic information when they use all their senses while learning. This is why our reading program combines elements of listening, seeing, touching, and moving (auditory, visual, tactile, kinesthetic). For example, prompted by the letter A on a flashcard, a student might say its name and sound, and write it in the air—all at the same time.

Our Orton-Gillingham based reading and spelling program will help students master reading and spelling in a structured process. They learn cumulatively and systematically.  This program has been used successful with students who have been unable to learn through traditional based methods, whole-language or phonics programs.

Pride’s Writing Program

The writing program at Pride is designed for students who need the essential skills to write a research paper or answer an essay on a test.  Our program begins with the parts of speech, progresses to sentence structure and paragraphs and ends with complete essays.  Our highly qualified and certified teachers use step-by-step instruction to break the writing process down into manageable steps using visual graphics and graphic organizers. Our students learn formulas for writing simple paragraphs and then transition to writing more complex paragraphs on their own.  For struggling writers, our structured writing program provides an essential foundation for thinking and writing skills.  For already proficient and advanced writers, it offers strategies, techniques, and opportunities to apply them.

Program Components

Our writing program incorporates the following skills

Multisensory

Our writing program incorporates a kinesthetic, multisensory approach that is particularly effective for students struggling with written expression.  Our highly trained and certified teachers give verbal cues to help students internalize written formation and increase “motor memory.”  Graphic organizers and visual graphics help students organize their thoughts into clear and detailed paragraphs.

Pride’s Math Program

Pride Learning Center’s math program helps produce confident problem solvers who enjoy studying math. Our program focuses on basic math concepts, and the students work with them to develop more advanced proficiency. In a very structured approach, students move from the concrete to the representational as their mathematical fluency improves. Thanks to our strong focus on visualizing and imagining of problems and numbers, our students learn their math facts, rules, and formulas, and are able to use this knowledge in real life applications.  Our major goals for math instruction are developing understanding, critical thinking, reasoning and problem-solving techniques.

Program Components

Here are some of the components our program incorporates to make math interesting, fun and motivating.

Multisensory

Although our instruction in mathematics is highly structured and systematic, it is taught in a fun and engaging environment using multisensory instruction.  Each lesson connects to previous learning as students progress at their own rate. Skills and procedures are introduced slowly and practiced repeatedly until students have mastered the concepts.

Our highly trained and certified teachers use a variety of instructional methods that address each child’s unique learning style through manipulatives, games and computer software.
